Chouhan is mourning the tragedy. Yet he realizes that the poverty in his village, the hunger of his family, and the mounting debt from their medical treatment mean he must eventually return to the city to work. "When I left Bengaluru, I resolved never to return," he says. "The best I can do is wait for a few weeks to see if the lockdown is relaxed before heading out again for work."
